Listen, I get it. You come around, misfire a couple of arrows and bring people together in the name of romance. Because of this, you’ve given us the Beckhams, the Carters, the Obamas- to name a few. But I, along with many others, have a bone to pick with you. Your so-called “Valentine’s Day” is as intense as it is feverish. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the exaggerated displays of affection couple bring. But don’t you think that love is meant to be associated with more than just romance? What about celebrating platonic relationships? What about encouraging female companionship?
Luckily, not everything is about finding a soulmate so don’t give up on February just yet. Thanks to the creative minds of Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, creators of the show Parks and Recreation, the idea of “Galentine’s Day” was born. Celebrated every 13th of February, the purpose is to celebrate the strength and beauty of female friendships. Parks and Recreation, as Schur put it on Amy’s Smart Girls, tells the story of park director Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) and her beloved friend Ann Perkins (played by Rashida Jones)- two distinct people who are the perfect additions to each other’s lives.
As Valentine’s Day is spent showing the love and care for a romantic partner, Leslie dedicated the same etiquette towards her group of friends. Galentine’s Day was a way of honoring the awesomeness and values she saw in them- all while enjoying a tasty meal. How she put this to practice can be seen here.
Do you have empowering, special women in your life? Then leave your responsibilities at home, turn on “Do Not Disturb” and gather your sisters. Here are a few suggestions that guarantee a memorable time no matter where in the world you are. Happy Galentine’s Day!
