It’s a trend taking the DIY world by storm. It’s cute, it’s versatile, and it doesn’t require any wood prep or sanding beforehand.
While most people associate it with a rustic, antique style, chalk paint can also be used to create a sleek, modern look. Some DIYers love chalk paint. Others say it isn’t worth the price, since it costs between $10 - $40 for the paint, and many people prefer to wax it after painting, which costs up to $30 extra. So, is chalk paint really worth it?
Sanding— Yes or No?
A lot of bloggers like chalk paint because you don’t have to sand the wood before you paint it. Or do you?
The beauty of chalk paint is in its simplicity. It’s a very real, down-to-earth paint. But according to some, you should always sand wood before painting it— no matter what. Just remember, your surface should be clean and splinter free before you paint, so when it doubt, get out the sandpaper.
Trendiness— Will it Last?
In the future, if certain colors fall out of style, and you realize that your cabinets don’t look as trendy as they did three years ago, you can always repaint them.
And as for the paint itself…
Chalk paint will probably remain in style, as long as the rustic look stays in style. In other words, forever.
Even though you can use chalk paint to get a more modern look, chalk paint begs to be distressed. And if you’re brand new to chalk paint terms, distressing the paint means “creating a natural worn look.” To learn how to distress, this article from Country Chic Paint has some good tips (https://www.countrychicpaint.com/pages/distressing-techniques).
Is it Right for Me?
Everybody has a slightly different sense of style. For some, chalk paint doesn’t fit their decorating style, and that’s okay. An example is this blog post from Kristi from Addicted 2 Decorating, explaining why she doesn’t like chalk paint. (https://www.addicted2decorating.com/why-i-dont-use-chalk-paint.html)
This is something to consider before you repaint all your kitchen cabinets with chalk paint. Do you like it? Listen closely to people who don’t like chalk paint— why don’t they like it? How can you learn from their mistakes (if they made any)?
It’s easy to find bloggers who love chalk paint and all its uses. Here’s a couple of our favorite blog posts to get you started:
